An eating disorder is not a choice. It is not a moral failing, or an indication of personal weakness. On the contrary, eating disorders are diseases, and like all diseases they exist outside the scope of individual will. No one ever decides to be an anorexic or a bulimic, in the same sense that no one ever decides to have cancer or diabetes. The corollary, of course, is that no anorexic or bulimic can ever simply decide to get better. If you’re going to beat an eating disorder, you’re going to need professional help.
The good news is that clinical eating disorder treatment really can help you get better. The only catch is that you have to seek it out. Remember, eating disorder treatment facilities don’t work miracles…and they can’t help patients who won’t walk through the front door. Before you can get better, you have to muster the courage to take the first step. The day you take up the fight against your eating disorder will quite literally be the first day of the rest of your life. It’s well past time you learned that lesson on your own terms.
